Charles Limb: Building the musical muscle

www.ted.com Charles Limb performs cochlear implantation, a surgery that treats hearing loss and can restore the ability to hear speech. But as a musician too, Limb thinks about what the implants lack They don’t let you fully experience music yet. (There’s a hair-raising example.) At TEDMED, Limb reviews the state of the art and the way forward.TEDTalks is a daily video podcast of the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world’s leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes. 9. what about ectomorphs?

  10. is it different for ectomorphs?

  11. you cant say how many calories you need for a person. everyone’s different, everyone has a different metabolism, everyone has a different amount of muscle and everyone’s a different body type. but im writing this while im watching the video and kevin just said that you’ve to find out how many calories you need for yourself so yeah, this comment was pointless, bye..

  12. 8:11 (pause screen) OMFG LORD KIETH COMING AT ME!

  13. 6:31

  14. u guys black or white?

  15. All kiiiiiinds of fat gainz!

  16. I’m 21 years old, 6ft 6 and I’ve put on almost 35lbs (185lbs to 220lbs) in my first 10 months of working out. My bf % has stayed round about 13% while I’ve been eating 4000 to 4500 calories a day (approx. 500 carbs, 150 fats, 250 protein).

  17. Bodybuilding and strength gains revolve around eating right. Eating right depends on body composition, genetics, and goals. For someone like me I need to watch carb intake, need higher protein intake, and plenty of veggies at about 2500-2700kcal bulk. For someone else, they might need 6000 calories and a gallon a milk of day. It all depends.

  18. I been bulking and i’ve been getting amazing results man like building all kindz of muscle.I am 5’10 currently just reached 170lbs naked weighing myself first thing in the morning. My stomach is getting large though bro I am eating a healthy diet too! Plz offer some tips bRAs

  20. FUCK NO !!! XD

  21. i ate 5-6k calories a day for a week (just an experiment) and didnt put on any weight at all…..i have a fast metabolism but i’ve built a decent base of muscle so far….wtf is up!?

  22. Yeah, and you make more. Seriously, a Google search would tell you this. What a stupid statement.

  23. hodgetwins, I was gaining over 1.5 kg = 3 pounds a month, now I know most of that is fat.. thanks for telling me I was so wrong and I didn’t mess up my body ;)

  24. haha , look at this guy trolling

  25. I’d say BULLSHIT

  26. I like the fact that Limb clearly outlined the progress we’ve made so far in terms of sensory restoration, and the challenges those with CIs may face with music; that was really insightful for me! However, he didn’t specify exactly what solutions could be offered, so that was a tad depressing.

  27. I’m surprised that there aren’t more “dislikes” on this page. I am a hearing person and a music teacher, but I also have a very special place in my heart for the Deaf and Deaf culture. There are many who feel that cochlear implants and other hearing devices detract from a rich lifestyle and culture that a child can experience when he/she is deaf. Music is not the only form of beauty out there, and the Deaf have their own definition of what beauty is.

  28. It is common for people who work in medicine to also play a musical instrument of some sort. Helps them deal with the loss of all of those people that they couldn’t help, apparently.

  29. Chopin Nocturne in B flat minor, Op. 9 No. 1 :)

  30. 7celestialtrumpets Reply December 23, 2012 at 2:04 am

what piece was the kid playing?

  31. Without beauty we would be just like robots… awful, I support this

  32. Beethoven was stone deaf of the 10 last years of his life. He wrote his biggest master pieces when he was compleatly deaf, like his 9th symphony, grosse fuge etc…

  33. How come no one tries to shape the receiver of the implant to adjust the wavelength of the sounds the way our ears do? Or why not some small repeater that breaks the frequencies “apart” before delivering them to the inner ear implant? It makes sense that there isn’t anything to separate the tones as efficiently as the outer ear.

  34. I had a piss-poor day at the construction site today and I could almost kill a random person with my bare hands, on my way home.
But watching that little girl and then her again, 10 years later, made me so happy!
But really, no wonder hearing impaired people dont enjoy music on the radio. Who does? They play the same disco song three times an hour! Borderline brainwashing, if you ask me.

  35. 11:28 Good kitty.

  36. or maybe to feel vibrations. . .

  37. Piss off. I’m a CI recipient and I could tell the difference between the different Usher songs and the Violin and Trumpet, and the song at the beginning, it was very ‘out of tune’ the second time and not as cheerful and vibrant as it ‘appeared’ to be the first time. So I kindly and respectfully beg you to consider that this ‘display of our finest’ is not that, it is what he perceives to be the ‘finest’. So get back to synapsing and understand that he might just be wrong.

  38. Nice segue into subject. Very masterful

  39. I’d rather lose my hearing than my eye sight. lol.

  40. i bet the implante useres would love dubstep with a heavy sub

  41. a musician AND a surgeon? must be the son of “high expectation asian dad”

  42. The reason Beethoven was able to compose after going deaf is that he had perfect pitch so he could “hear” pitches in his mind without external reference. And he did not lose 100% of his hearing as he sawed the legs off his piano and put his head to the floor to faintly hear tones

    19 people want subtitles

  44. What? It’s not a small group at all.

  45. Yes it’s another culture and they don’t want to be alone, I agree about that. But how did the afro-Amer. react when racism slightly disappeared? They liked it, except for a few. Is the part that brings out the message that they do not want to be cured of deafness just a very small very vocal group (no pun intended). Btw Gay people don’t have a disability because they don’t miss anything, they don’t miss the whole Love thing. Deaf people do miss something, a sense. That’s different

  46. No people in the deaf community want to show that being deaf isn’t a disability to them. They strive to be treated as regular people. It’s a whole different culture, because they speak a different language. It’s sort of like social darwinism in America’s past- white Americans viewed black Americans as disabled because of their difference in skin color. You have to get past thinking it’s a disability.

  47. Genius

  48. I think 95% of humanity has lost its common sense :-/

  49. Chopin’s Nocturne Op9 No1 in B flat minor ;)

  50. did you just compare an handicap like not being able to hear, to being gay? Deaf people just don’t want to be alone at being deaf.
